Modern Foreign Languages

At Marshfield Primary, we believe that learning a foreign language broadens pupils’ horizons, deepens cultural understanding, and equips children with valuable communication skills for an increasingly interconnected world. Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum aims to inspire enthusiasm and curiosity while building strong foundations for future language learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
We teach French using CUSP – a carefully planned and progressive scheme of learning that develops children’s confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Lessons introduce new vocabulary and language structures through interactive, engaging activities such as songs, games, role-play and practical communication tasks. Children revisit key language regularly to help build secure knowledge and confidence over time.

Our approach ensures an inclusive, supportive learning environment where every child can experience success. Teachers introduce vocabulary in small, manageable steps and model pronunciation clearly. Aims

Our MFL curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and ensures all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written French from a variety of authentic sources

  • speak with increasing confidence and fluency, using accurate pronunciation and intonation

  • express ideas clearly through simple speech and writing

  • develop an interest in languages and an understanding of cultures beyond their own

  • are well prepared for further language learning at secondary school

We place strong emphasis on cultural appreciation. Children learn about French customs, festivals, daily life and geography, helping them develop respect for diversity and a broader understanding of the world.

Children begin formal language learning in Year 3. Throughout Key Stage 2, they build from simple vocabulary and phrases to more complex sentence structures and conversations. Retrieval practice, vocabulary quizzes and spoken rehearsal are embedded to help children retain and confidently apply their knowledge.

Carlton Edge

There’s no better way to learn a new language than to experience it first hand.  We took our Year 6 children to Paris – it was so fulfilling to see the children using their French in real life situations!

Hey there, couldn’t help noticing you’re using Internet Explorer

That’s great and all, and we commend you for pushing through with it. Unfortunately we no longer offer support for IE; it hasn’t received a major update since 2015 and Microsoft are dropping support for it later in the year.

If you’re using Windows 10 and want to stick with a built in browser, please consider switching to Edge. Or, if you really want to enjoy the internet properly we strongly recommend downloading Google Chrome here.
