Reading Tips From Michael Rosen
Thu 24 Sep 2015I attended a Headteacher Conference today where I was fortunate to meet the actual Sir Michael Rosen in Person.
Michael Wayne Rosen (born 7 May 1946) is an English children's novelist and poet, the author of 140 books. He served as Children's Laureate from June 2007 to June 2009. He has also been a TV presenter and political columnist.
Today, he gave the following fundamental questions you should ask your children when sharing a book - which I thought would be extremely useful for parents and carers to refer to when reading to or with their children:-
Is there anything in this book that reminds you of anything that has happened to you?
Is there anything in this book that reminds you of anything you have ever read somewhere else, watched or seen on TV?
If you could ask any character in the book a question - what would it be?
Sir Michael Rosen also expressed the importance of letting your children choose their own books.
I was hugely inspired by his ideas and enthusiasm and will be sharing his tips with the teachers and children of Marshfield over the forthcoming weeks.

Headteacher Introduction
Fri 18 Sep 2015It gives me great pleasure to write to you as the new Headteacher of Marshfield Primary School and to welcome you to what I am sure will be a very busy and exciting year ahead.
I am joining Marshfield as its new Headteacher, having spent the last 13 years as both an Assistant Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher in a variety of schools in Liverpool which have undergone intensive change and have made remarkable improvements. The skills and experiences I have acquired working in challenging schools have provided my most valuable and rewarding teaching experiences.
I was certain from my first impressions, during my interview, that Marshfield was the perfect choice for me as Headteacher and since starting my post last week I have been tremendously impressed by the whole school, especially the children. Every time I step onto the yard I am welcomed by a sea of inquisitive smiley faces, each desperate to learn and immensely proud of their school.
As I am certain you are all aware, Marshfield has some real strengths. The practice in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 is excellent and children make great progress. They achieve as well as or if not better than children in most schools. However, I do have concerns regarding the performance of Key Stage 2 children. For the last three years, children in Year 6 have not performed well and the performance of last year’s Y6 was very low.
I feel it is really important to assure parents/carers that I recognise work needs to be done quickly to improve the outcomes for all our children. I believe Marshfield is a school of huge potential and I am determined to secure an outstanding future for the school. I have the very highest expectations of the staff and all the children and it is my intention by working together we can make our school the best it can possibly be.
I will be holding a coffee morning on Wednesday 30th September in the main hall at 9:00a.m. Refreshments will be served and I welcome the opportunity to meet you all in person.
In addition, I would like to extend the school’s best wishes for all of our community celebrating Eid in the forthcoming weeks. School will be officially closed on Tuesdsay 21st September and Wednesday 22nd September. As many parents/carers have expressed concerns that Eid will also fall on Thursdsay 23rd September, I just wanted to assure all of you that your child’s attendance will not be affected due to absence for religious observance. I do however expect all children to return to school on Friday 25th September. All classes have organised parties and Eid celebrations - which I’m sure will be far too exciting to be missed.
To close, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the numerous parents/carers who have made me feel so welcome as the Headteacher of Marshfield, your well-wishes and positive comments have been greatly appreciated. Looking forward to working closely with you in the future.
